About Scott
Scott began drumming at the age of six and was initially taught by his Grandfather, Alec Birrell. He began learning through Burntisland & District Pipe Band under the instruction of Mark Gibson. In 2003 Scott progressed to play for Boghall & Bathgate Caledonia Pipe Band. He was initially under the tutelage of the legendary Tom Brown followed by the World Champion Gordon Brown.
Scott studied at the prestige Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow where he received expert tuition from sixteen times World Solo Drumming Champion, Jim Kilpatrick MBE.
Scott studied the academy for four years gaining a BA Honours Degree in Scottish Music.
Shortly after Scott completed his studies he moved to Invercargill, New Zealand where he led the City of Invercargill Highland Pipe Band and was employed by the Southland Piping & Drumming Development Trust. Scott promoted Scottish music in New Zealand was a driving force behind the Invercargill band moving from Grade 4 to grade 1 in just 5 years.
During Scott’s 10 years with Boghall & Bathgate the band won multiple major championships in Europe including the World Drum Corps Championship and the Champion of Champions on multiple occasions. Scott now performs with the Scottish Power Pipe Band and travels to Scotland every year to compete at the World Pipe Band Championships.
Scott is currently employed as the Head of Highland Drumming at Scotch College, Melbourne and manages the school’s Scottish drumming programme.
